10 days of My blog Life – Google Analitycs vs Hosting provider Stats.

Geekhall.net has 10 days now, to know, if people even come to this site I’ve put 2 statistics applications. One is from my hosting provider, the second one is Google Analitycs. Well, here’s the trouble begin. They show totally different things, and it is hard to judge, which os more accurate, and this article will be exactly about that.

Lest begin with my hosting provider statisitcs.

From what can be seen, in past 10 days I had 2506 unique visitors, with 227 uniques average per day. Well, that’s good for a blog having only 10 days right? :). Going deeper into the statistics shows me that almost 45% of my traffic comes from USA and Canada. Very Good :).
Seeing those statistics make me happy. It makes me feel, that I’m writing some useful stuff for people who need this knowledge.

But then, I go to Google Analitycs and this is what I see:

What the hell? 548 visits and 374 visitors? That’s nearly 7 times less, than from my hosting provider statistics!
The only thing which was common for both stats is that most of the traffic is from USA and Canada, at least that good right? :)

So I was getting little worried and started searching why it is happening like that. And come with some conclusions:

  • I’ve placed Google Analitycs code at the very end of my site (in end.php file – the last loading possible), that means it only counts, when everything loaded properly. But testing in all major browser, using proxies and without proxies, indicates that my site has NO PROBLEM with loading to the end, and furthermore it is going pretty fast (good hosting provider, hehe :) )
  • Statistics application provided by my hosting service are more accurate, because they “start the site”. If someone is entering my site (even if this means the whole site for some reasons won’t load in all) he is already counted to the statistics.
  • Google analytics for some reasons has problems with identifying European sources of traffic. From what I’ve read almost 20% of my traffic comes from Spain, France, Germany and Switzerland.
  • Statistics provided by my host also counts me (even if I go in Admin area), but, I log 1-2 daily so the difference should not be so much right (fo sure NOT 7 times more traffic from Admin aera :) )

Well, my conclusion – both statistics gives me quite much information about peoples visitng my sites, but my host provider stats are more accurate to that, what actually is going on with my site. Google analytics are good to know how much time they spend on my site and from where exactly does the traffic comes.

In my opiniopn Google Analitycs is not the best stat application, but if they improve, it will be really powerful tool for webmasters.

I should propably have a 3rd party stats application – I’ll have better comparison and know more, about users. I recommend You to do the same :

List of CPM affiliates

Everyone wants to have some profit from theirs websites. For some, Adsense and contextual ads just won’t work. For them, there are many other programs, and most popular is CPM.

But first, some theory. CPM( Cost Per Mille ) means cost per thousand impressions. That means, that after 1000 views of ad, You will be given some revenue, no clicks required, You’re getting revenue just for showing it on Your Site. Every traffic is counted differently and it is based on where do You get the traffic, most valuable are United Kingdom and U.S.A traffic (because most of companies are from these countries), but other countries have also decent CPM rate.

After short briefing what CPM means, we can start to list the affiliates, some companies offer more ways to create revenue, but I’ll stick to thos, I think are the best for target company:

Well, some of the most popular companies with CPM. If You know any good companies feel free to contact me and I’ll surely add them up here! :).

Freelancers – respect Yourself.

I would like to open up discussion about freelancing. Do You, as a freelancer or similiar value properly Your work? writing about this, because some people were discussing ob Digital Points forums about “crappy quality of work”.

I would like to rethink it myself. Well, for the most part, if I do some designs/coding or any other type of work, I try to do it as best I can. I also know, that most of things require a lot of time to do properly (for example make the design, which will be major browsers compatible, for Internet Explorer 7, Opera and Firefox it can be done pretty quick, but the real pain begins when You want to do it compatible also to Safari, Internet Explorer 6 and some minor browsers) and in the end, when You calcullate Your time spent on project, You see that it took You at least 3-4 more hours than You estimated. But hey, You’re happy knowing that Your deisgn has pretty good coding, and it won’t gonna “go crazy” in some browsers.

So, when the all is done, You want to sell Your hard work right? You post an auction on some forums, with price, that You think You deserve for Your time and then it hits You… someone will do something similiar to Your design (sometimes so similiar, that You think someone stole Your idea) for a half of price, That You want, because he “needs quick money!”. Or You enter the forum and see, that most of designs are selling for 30-40$, which in my opinion is a laughable money for 8-10 hours of good coding/designing ( this means that you worked for 5$/hour, sorry but people working in Mcdonalds makes more – no offense). You studied, and learned many things, spending a lot of time to be good and You get that kind of money for Your effort? Well, in my opinion this is wrong, and the fault for this is only OURS. We make it like that, because, competiton is so big, that some people will sell their designs for penny, “only to sell and get over with it”. This is my plea for all of You, good and reliable designers – do not lower Your prices to compete with yourself so badly.

Remember, that there are a lot of people that are willing to pay for Your work some good money. And remember, than doing something GOOD, is better, than doing it CHEAP.

In conclusion. People, who thinks, that they can buy a portal/well designed Wordpress Theme/ Web 2.0 Homesite for 50$ should be taught a lesson. If they want to buy cheap, then go ahead. Let them buy from peoples offering “Proffesional, Unique and Well coded Design for just 15$!”. Maybe they’ll understand, that You have to pay for a well done project a little more, when they notice, that project they bought for occasional price of 15$ is bugged, looks bad on older web browsers and most elements of the site looks worse after editing it with content. Some elements are missing, some are showed incorrectly and so. All in all, they will have only 2 choices: Turn to good web designer/devlopers for help or live with the fact, that something is not working as it should be.

I believe, that I’m not the best designer in the world, but at least I’m not the worst. I love to do my work good, and I’m happy when the client is satisfied with the product. But to do that i spent much time improving myself, learning different styles/ways to code etc. And I believe I should be paid a decent/good money for my work. Only then both sides (me and a customer) are really satisfied.

What Do You think? Which is more important to You? Do something good, or do something quickly and cheap?

Common Mistakes of Bloggers.
7 tips how to avoid them.

Everyone of us makes mistakes, even bloggers, who wants their blog to be the best. I have some tips to Everyone wanting to make their blogs better:

  1. Links with “NO FOLLOW” attribute
  2. If You have any advertises on Your blog, or simple did some paid reviews. Remember to link to Your affiliates with “no follow” attribute. Google is lowing your page rank if You do not do it. Also by adding “no follow” to most of Your links You won’t turn Your blog in links junk.

  3. Not unique content
  4. I know, the easies and the fastest way is to ctrl-c, ctrl-v some articles from Articles directories. But what for? You want to do a blog, which will have some meaning and maybe You’ll be proud of it if it gonna bring some revenue, or do You want to have another spam blog that quotes others words all the time? In my opinion writing about something in your own words, even if that subject has been talkeb 100 times over and over have more value than copied content.
Remember one rule – unique content brings more visits.

  5. Posting Your links in wrong section of forums
  6. If there’s a thread on forum about political issues – DO NOT post there with Your “how to boost adsense earnings” link. If You want to link to your blog on any forums do it with some sense. Don’t spam in every category. If You have something to say about Web hostign do it in web hosting section etc.

  7. Page loading time
  8. It is very important how long user need to wait to see Your blogs. That’s why the best thing to do is putting every scripts from other sites on the bottom of Your page. For example, You have a banner on start of You blog from the site, that temporarly is shutted down. The image cannot be found and the page isn’t loading for about 40 seconds, after that time in place of image there’s a text “NOT FOUND”. User had to wait 40 seconds – propably he resigned already. There’s a solution for that – download every banner from Your affiliate to Your server and then ut it on Your site.Faster loading time = happier user.

  9. Too much contrast/distracting a user
  10. First of all Your blog should be themed with steady, non contrasitng color, why? It’s easier to read and it is more comfortable for user. Secondly, if You want to put some banners on Your site make sure, that they are no “flashing types” banners. Best banners are static, nicely mixing in Your blog climate, then user thinks that this is a part of the site, no a advertise screaming “HEY! I”M HERE! CLICK ME!”

  11. Too much Ads
  12. Yes, I know, that every blogger wants to have some income from his blog. But, putting 3 Adsense text ads, 4 banners of affiliates and a popup window is a bad thing to do. User cannot just read Your content – he needs to find it first in this junk of ads. To let the user read what he wants and have some revenue from ads You need remove some, and rethink what should be removed. In my opinion 1-2 text ads and 2 banners are enough ( 1 at left/right side of Your blog and one at the bottom ).

  13. More patience
  14. Every good blog needs time to rise. Good income will not flow in matter of 2-4 days, or 1-2 week. No, You need to put some work to Your blog. Make it worth to stay and read what You write about. Read and always search knowledge letting Your blog to be a better than it is now.

7 simple tips, that should improve Your blog,if proper used. Maybe even rise its value for people from the net.
